Cohen Announces $14 Million to Build Homes, Promote Health Care and Preserve Jobs

Washington, DC - 06 July 2009 - (RealEstateRama) – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) today announced $14,426,201 in federal funding has been awarded to the Ninth Congressional District by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the National Endowment for the Arts. 

The federal funding will be used to create housing, help qualified families with affordable housing, fund homelessness programs, train medical professionals, undertake important genetic research, and preserve jobs in the arts community.

“Whether it’s creating good paying construction jobs that will help to fix up our neighborhoods, attracting the best and brightest doctors and scientists to Memphis, or preserving jobs that promote our district’s rich cultural heritage, this infusion of federal funding puts us squarely on the path of economic recovery,” Congressman Cohen said. “I was proud to vote for the Recovery Act that helped make much of this funding possible. I will continue to fight to help bring even more federal funding to the Ninth District that will create even more jobs and economic opportunities.”

The Ninth District will receive $13,435,884 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to help with affordable housing and homelessness programs. Specifically, the district has been awarded $8,128,514 in a Community Development Block Grant which helps to provide housing and improve neighborhoods.  To help expand access to affordable housing for qualified families, the district has received $4,950,415 through the HOME Investment Partnership Program. To help boost homelessness initiatives and expand the quality of homeless shelters, the district will receive $356,955 from the Emergency Shelter Grant.

To help promote medical education and research in the district, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a combined $865,317 in funding to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis. $537,717 was awarded from the Children’s Graduate Medical Education Program Grant that supports the training of pediatric doctors and other medical residents. The second award totaling $327,600 will fund a research project to better understand chromosomal splitting entitled “Kinetochore Function and Cell Cycle Progression Revision”

Today’s grant awards from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services bring the total of federal funding for health care research in the Ninth District this year alone to over $35 million.

Finally, to help preserve jobs with non-profits that promote the arts and humanities that could be lost due to a decrease in fundraising contributions, the National Endowment of the Arts has awarded three organizations a combined total of $125,000. Specifically, the Beale Street Caravan, Inc will receive $25,000.  The Memphis Orchestral Society and the Center for Southern Folklore will each receive $50,000.

Congressman Cohen fought to include national funding increases for the NEA as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that President Obama signed into law.
